Choose to ‘speak life’
Monday, July 06, 2009

Do you know what the most powerful muscle in the human body is? Maybe your well-toned bicep or calf? No, the most powerful muscle in your body is your tongue. (Read James 3:3-10)

Have you ever been cut down with words? It hurts, doesn’t it? If we’re told something negative for long enough, we start believing it.

Has anyone ever said anything to you to encourage or build you up? It feels pretty good, doesn’t it? I bet it even made you feel full of energy and confidence.

Proverbs 18:21 (NIV) says, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” You have the power to speak life or speak death with your tongue.

How do you speak to yourself? Do you tell yourself that you’re dumb and not very good looking? Don’t speak that garbage over yourself!

Speak life over yourself. I want to encourage you to see yourself as God sees you. You aren’t just some number on a planet with 6.7 billion people on it. The Bible says that God knows you personally and intimately. You were even made in the image of God, which makes you pretty good looking!

I also want to encourage you to speak life to your family. Do you know that if you tell a child that he/she is worthless, they will believe you? We tend to say things to our own family that we wouldn’t even dare to say to a complete stranger.

James 5:16 (NLT) says, “The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and wonderful results.” Never underestimate the power of your prayers for your children and grandchildren. They can be the catalyst that releases God’s many gifts and blessings.

Don’t forget that you have the power of life and death in your tongue. Choose to speak life, not death.
