Storm spikers unbeaten in conference play
Wednesday, October 28, 2009

The Napa Valley College women’s volleyball team pulled off a victory that was twice as sweet on Friday night.

Not only did the Storm dispatch rival Solano Community College-Fairfield in five games — 25-12, 25-18, 19-25, 24-26, 15-7 — but NVC finished the first round of Bay Valley Conference play unbeaten at 8-0.

“We played good volleyball, not great volleyball, but we did enough to squeak out a win,” said Storm head coach Kelly Van Winden, whose club has been battling illness as of late. “(The Falcons) have a few hustlers that really go after the ball, and that made it exciting.”

Jane Stier posted 16 kills and 14 digs, while Tiffany Molinar piled up 44 assists and 25 digs on a hot night in the gym.

“This was a battle. We had a great crowd,” said Van Winden.

Lauren Sechitano gave the team a lift from the libero spot with 37 digs, while Christina Fonville and Erin Feeney added eight kills apiece to go along with 15 and 16 digs respectively.

Napa Valley was scheduled to start the second round of conference play Wednesday against visiting Laney College-Oakland. Results were not available at press time.
