POINT ARENA — The Calistoga High football team knew it would face an uphill battle Saturday afternoon against the Point Arena Pirates.

But two big plays early on sealed the Wildcats’ fate in a 33-0 road loss Saturday on the Mendocino Coast.

Harlan Bailey returned the opening kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown.

And when the Pirates ran their first offensive play from scrimmage, running back DJ Egger (18 carries, 186 yards) scored one of his four rushing touchdowns from 52 yards away with 7:03 remaining in the opening quarter.

Egger starred at quarterback last year when Point Arena visited Calistoga for what turned out to be an eight-man football game.

Tanner Herrera added both extra points to give Point Arena a 14-0 after one quarter. The score stayed that way at halftime but the Pirates opened the floodgates in the second half as Egger scored three more touchdowns from 12, 21 and 12 yards away.

The Pirates generated 217 yards of total offense (all rushing) and did not attempt one pass the entire game.

Then again, they didn’t need to do so.

For Calistoga, Joshua Monroy continues to be a bright spot. The senior running back amassed 153 yards rushing on 30 carries.

The Wildcats gained 205 yards of total offense.

“They did nothing other than change the defensive front on us,” Calistoga head coach Mike Ervin said of the Pirates. “The offensive line did better today for the most part but we’re still offsides. We go on three. That shouldn’t be a problem.”

Defensively for Calistoga (1-5, 1-3 NCL II South), Travis King and Jose Sanchez each recorded a quarterback sack, while Rafael Torres-Feiner and JT Blakeley recorded one tackle for lost yardage.

“I drove up here for two weekends by myself,” Ervin said. “It’s not the most joyous trip in the world, but I’d do it a million times if I thought we were going to win.”

Up next: Saturday at Cristo Rey (Sacramento)

Calistoga visits Cristo Rey (Sacramento) on Saturday at 7 p.m. in a game that will be played at San Juan High in Citrus Heights.
