Calistoga High boys/girls soccer squads reach postseason party
Boys nab eighth berth in row, host No. 13 Bentley, Girls earn first trip to playoffs in program’s 11-year history
Thursday, November 05, 2009

It was a good weekend for the Calistoga High boys soccer team.

Senior Angel Guzman kicked his way into the record books in the Wildcats’ 13-1 drubbing over the Tomales Braves on Saturday, and then Calistoga learned Sunday that it had earned its eighth consecutive postseason berth.

Guzman booted six goals in Saturday’s victory, which tied a school record set twice by Edwin Meza last season.

Meza, who now plays for Jefferson College in Missouri, holds the school record for goals scored in a single season with 55 in 2007.

Mario Sanchez tallied three goals of his own while Michel Arroyo, Cristian Escobedo, Sigi Carrillo and Christian Alcaras each added one.

Calistoga earned the No. 4 seed in the 16-team North Coast Section Div. III bracket and was slated to host No. 13 Bentley (San Francisco) on Wednesday night after press time.

Roseland Prep 4, Calistoga 3

The Knights avenged a 2-0 loss at Calistoga earlier this season by edging the Wildcats on Friday.

Roseland Prep led 1-0 at halftime before both teams scored three goals apiece in the second half. The Knights led 4-2 at one point before Calistoga added a goal. Sanchez scored a pair of goals while Guzman added one.

The Wildcats took control early in the contest played at home on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

Calistoga tallied two goals in the first half to assume a 2-0 advantage at intermission.

Arroyo, Carrillo and Luis Avila each scored one goal for the Wildcats.

Girls earn first trip to playoffs in program’s 11-year history

The Calistoga High girls soccer team finished the 2009 regular season with a flourish and earned its first-ever trip to the CIF North Coast Section playoffs.

The question as of press time — how long was that stint going to last?

That’s because the Wildcats, who have fielded girls soccer as a varsity sport since 1999, were scheduled to play their first-round game at Rincon Valley Christian (Santa Rosa) on Wednesday after press time.

Calistoga earned the No. 9 seed, while RVC was No. 8.

The Wildcats finished the aforementioned regular season boom with a 3-2 win over Roseland Prep (Santa Rosa).

Calistoga entered the contest knowing full well that a victory could cement a postseason berth under second-year head coach Stephanie Dietz.

Calistoga scored with just two minutes gone by in the first half, as Jenna Reynolds connected with Krista Carrillo for the first of her two goals.

Roseland Prep tied the game two minutes later, but Calistoga answered with two goals before halftime to take a 3-1 advantage.

Carrillo added her second goal of the game while Pamela Rojas also found the back of the net.

The Knights trimmed the deficit to 3-2 with 11 minutes left in the contest but got no closer.

Roseland Prep had various chances to tie the game, but senior goalkeeper Megan Hunt closed the door numerous times and tallied 14 saves.

Calistoga 4, Tomales 0

Playing a Tomales team that it dismantled 8-0 earlier this season, the Wildcats kept things simple on Thursday at Tomales in order to preserve themselves against a much stronger Roseland Prep team.

Carrillo recorded two goals while Reynolds and Lucie Stambor each scored one.
