Chamber cuts six-week-old job
Economy cited; Position could be filled in spring
Sunday, November 22, 2009
Calistoga Chamber of Commerce leader Rex Albright early this week confirmed the first layoff of a full-time employee stemming from an ailing economy.
“With the economy as tough as it is at this time, we decided we needed to focus all of our economic resources on programs that promote Calistoga and bringing tourism to our community.”
The position eliminated was that of the visitor center manager. The job could be filled again by next spring.
The Calistoga Chamber of Commerce gets just under $300,000 from the City of Calistoga to operate the Chamber and the Calistoga Visitors Center operations. Other funds generated by various programs like the recent Jazz and Blues Festival and the Mustard Festival and more augment those funds.
Other than a small army of volunteers who help staff Chamber and Visitors Center opertations, the only other full time employee – other than Albright – is the events coordinator. Two others, Eden Umble and George Schreiner are part-timers.
