Elsie Stefani
1928-2010
Tuesday, February 09, 2010
Longtime St. Helena resident Elsie Stefani, known to many as “Tia,” went to her Lord Jan. 28, 2010. She was born May 29, 1928, in Iron Mountian, Mich., to Frank and Teresa Stefani.
Elsie attended St. Mary’s University in Milwaukee, Wis., and graduated with a nursing degree.
Her nursing career took her to many hospitals, including Vallejo General, Queen of the Valley Medical Center and the Veterans Home of California at Yountville, where she was the head nurse of the intensive care unit. She was described as an exceptional caregiver. Elsie retired in 1987.
After her retirement, Elsie enjoyed daily walks with her most recent companions, Casey and Kobe, in the surrounding vineyard and town area.
Elsie’s passions included a great love of animals, cooking, tennis, reading and travel. She was very devoted to her church and the St. Helena community. Elsie volunteered for many community activities, including the homeless outreach kitchens. She was a blood donor and longtime member of the ASPCA.
Elsie had a contagious and infectious smile and has been described by those who knew her as generous, kind, humorous, adventurous, but most of all loving.
Elsie has gone to join her only sister, Marie, and is survived by her two nieces, Kathleen and Michele Lyons, whom she considered her daughters, as well as extended family and many friends.
Elsie’s favorite prayer was the prayer of St. Francis: “Lord, make me an instrument of your peace...” May you rest in peace, loving godmother and friend. We will hold you in our hearts forever.
The rosary took place yesterday at St. Helena Catholic Church. The funeral Mass is held at
11 a.m today at the church.
The family has suggested memorial contributions may be made to Humane Society of Napa, 625 Factory Stores Drive, Napa, CA 94558 or Napa County Animal Shelter, 942 Hartle Court, Napa, CA 94559.
The family is being cared for by Morrison Funeral Chapel, serving the Napa Valley, 963-3536.
