Name that date: Lady in black
Nothing turns a man’s head more certainly than the appearance of a mysterious woman in black. She’s elusive and worthy of further investigation. This lady, believed (by the editor) to have been named Mary Gisford, represents a real Calistoga mystery at this writing. This photograph of her bears the inscription, “Compliments of Mary, Mollie and Mr. Patten.” It also bears the date on the back in the 19th Century when this picture was taken. Can you name that date?

High flying!
Name That Date regular Ray Breitenstein of Franz Valley must have taken the earliest stage in from the Busy Bees because his guess, scrawled on a piece of notebook paper, was posted at The Weekly Calistogan early last Thursday. According to his information, he says, the tightrope walking master of Calistoga pulled his stunt — three times — during mid-August, 1917. That’s exactly right. The Weekly Calistogian, the grandparent of today’s The Weekly Calistogan, makes short mention of the deed in August 1917 that  “A tight rope walker gave an exhibition last night on Lincoln Avenue that was well worth seeing. He surely is a wonder.” Ray’s a wonder, too, and picks up the week’s bragging rights yet again!

Once placed among top 4 Valley wineries, Larkmead Vineyards is forgotten, but not gone
Larkmead Vineyards in the northern Napa Valley is a likely place for the time capsule that was ceremoniously buried there last month. Time is what Larkmead is all about.

Home is where the house is
Ask Bill or Sharon Kastrinos about the home they now have in Calistoga and they’re likely as not to describe it as cozy — really, really cozy.
